How to Make a Colour Sample

One of the most asked questions we get is about how to make new colours. You can make 100's of new dyes by mixing any of the 17 core Tintex colours together. You can also adjust the amount of a single dye to make pastels.

Another question that often gets asked is how much dye is needed.  As a general rule darker or brighter colours use more dye than pastels. The dye needed varies by fabric weight and fabric content. To get the same colour on cotton, linen, silk, spandex & viscose you can use less Tintex than you need for nylon, acetate, rayon & wool.

For best results with your dyeing projects, do a colour test sample before starting.

Colour Sample Directions

  1. Boil enough water for 1-3 cups of water in a kettle (or heat water in a microwave) and set aside.
  2. Cut a 12" x 12" swatch of fabric or use a folded white paper towel.
  3. Measure the required amour of Tintex; each custom colour recipe may include full or partial measurements of teaspoons or tablespoons of 1-3 dyes (example: 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 tsp and/or Tbsp). 
  4. Completely dissolve Tintex powder into 1 or 2 cups of the heated water and stir thoroughly.
  5. Dip fabric or paper towel into mixed dye solution. 
  6. Adjust the amount of dye as needed to get your desired custom colour.
