Pre-Dissolve Tintex with Squeeze Bottles
Using Tintex is easy for first time dyers when the dye powder is completely dissolved. Hand dyeing is a great way to start experimenting with fabric dye. Tie dyeing can be done using a bucket or with squeeze bottles. In general, you will get the best results when the water can stay in a very hot state while you dye. Tintex always needs to be completely mixed in very hot water.
The amount of dye needed depends on the dry fabric weight and desired colour intensity of your project. This varies depending on what you are dyeing and what you want the colour to look like. In general, darker colours use more dye than light colours (the dye colour guide has more info).
Having access to a scale can be helpful so you can weigh your dry fabric. Darker colours use double the usual amount of dye for your fabric content/dry weight. While tie dyeing, you can keep the dye on your fabric for a longer time. Try wrapping your project with plastic and set aside overnight before rinsing.
When starting a tie dye project, decide the amount of dye needed and use a large enough container/measuring cup to mix the dye & hot water together. As an example, a large 2-4 Cup capacity measuring could be suitable for pre-dissolving the dye powder. You can try using 2 Cups of very hot water to pre-dissolve the dye powder and adjust the amount to suit your specific container or project needs.
5 Simple Steps for Tie Dyeing Success:
- Wearing gloves, use boiling water to dissolve the Tintex powder(s) in a measuring cup.
- Thoroughly mix the dye powder & hot water with a spoon; all dye powder must combined before using.
- Let dye solution cool to 140 Fahrenheit and carefully add to your squeeze bottle (adjust temperature if needed to suit your specific squeeze bottle).
- Optional: carefully shake the dye solution (with the top on) to make sure it is still completely combined.
- Apply dye solution to your fabric.
