Want the Facts Wed - Light Colour
For this Want-the-Facts (WTF) Wed post, we look at what to do when fabric dyeing results turn out lighter then expected. Here are some of the common reasons that you may be getting light colour results below (and in the FAQ section)
Existing Fabric Colour
Take a look at your item and decide if you need to lighten the existing colour first. Is it a dark or medium colour or is it light? Some fabrics are light enough and don’t need additional lightening.
Wash Fabric Before Dyeing
Always start a dyeing project with clean fabric. Washing new items may help remove treatments and fabrics that are dirty may not dye evenly. If you are hand washing, make sure that all soap is rinsed away before starting. When items are wet the dye will work better.
Use Enough Fabric Dye & Hot Water
Use the right amount of water and dye for your project. Remember each item is different. Weigh before and adjust your dye amount accordingly. While dyeing you only need just enough water to cover your item. The item needs to move freely in the dyebath. When hand dyeing fabric, manually move the item around to achieve consistent colour for the required amount of time.Dye Long Enough
You control fabric colour intensity by the amount of dye and time used. If you quickly dip fabric into the dyebath the colour intensity will be lighter. Adjust time for darker or more vibrant colours.
100% Polyesters or Acrylics
Our dye is not intended for 100% Polyester or Acrylic fabrics. The dye colour will be extremely light for those fabric compositions. Tintex is created for most washable fabrics like: cotton, linen, silk, nylon, acetate, rayon, wool, spandex and viscose.
